Read from the top and stop at the first row that fits your kitchen; that row sets the calendar. Where two fit, the shorter interval wins. Past the last row, another cleaning will not help.
Why the interval is a range
Sub-Zero’s interval runs from six months to twelve, and it tells pet owners to clean sooner. A coil does not clog on a timetable; it clogs on whatever the kitchen puts into the air. A dog, a wooded lot outside the door or a remodel down the hall all send more lint through the louvres than a quiet household does.
Where the coil is on your unit
On a full-size Classic unit the condenser sits at the top, behind the flip-up grille above the door. On Designer columns and undercounter units it sits at the base, behind the louvred kickplate. If matching panels hide which line you own, the rating plate settles it, and your use-and-care guide marks where that plate is fitted.
The cleaning, step by step
- Turn the unit off at its control panel, as the manufacturer’s steps begin.
- Open the way in: pull the bottom edge of a Classic grille out and rotate it up, or take the kickplate off a Designer or undercounter unit.
- Put gloves on. The aluminium fins are sharp, and they bend if pushed.
- Draw a soft brush attachment along the fins, never across them, with the vacuum running. On Classic units Sub-Zero also allows a can of compressed air, or a compressor on a low setting, for what the brush leaves behind.
- Close up, switch back on, and give the temperatures up to a day to settle.
No chemical cleaner or degreaser is needed; the manufacturer does not recommend them.
Keeping the count
Write the date where you will see it, with the interval from your row beside it. A household that shares the kitchen with a dog belongs on the six-month mark; one with no pets and little cooking can hold to twelve. Why is the unit still warm the evening after a cleaning?
